چکیده

In many models of inflation, the period of accelerated expansion ends with preheating, a highly non-thermal phase of evolution during which the inflaton pumps energy into a specific set of momentum modes of field(s) to which it is coupled. This necessarily induces large, transient density inhomogeneities which can source a significant spectrum of gravitational waves. In this paper, we consider the generic properties of gravitational waves produced during preheating, perform detailed calculations of the spectrum for several specific inflationary models, and identify problems that require further study. In particular, we argue that if these gravitational waves exist they will necessarily fall within the frequency range that is feasible for direct detection experiments – from laboratory through to solar system scales. We extract the gravitational wave spectrum from numerical simulations of preheating after λφ and m2φφ 2 inflation, and find that they lead to a gravitational wave amplitude of around Ωgwh 2 ∼ 10. This is considerably higher than the amplitude of the primordial gravitational waves produced during inflation. However, the typical wavelength of these gravitational waves is considerably shorter than LIGO scales, although in extreme cases they may be visible at scales accessible to the proposed BBO mission. We survey possible experimental approaches to detecting any gravitational wave background generated during preheating.

Primordial Gravitational Waves: a Probe of the Very Early Universe

We discuss the potential cosmological role of gravitational wave astronomy as a probe of the very early universe. The next generation of detectors—now in production—may be able to observe a stochastic background of gravitational waves produced by violent processes during the earliest moments after the creation of the universe. Viable theoretical scenarios within detector sensititivity include s...

Stochastic background of gravitational waves from hybrid preheating.

The process of reheating the Universe after hybrid inflation is extremely violent. It proceeds through the nucleation and subsequent collision of large concentrations of energy density in bubblelike structures, which generate a significant fraction of energy in the form of gravitational waves. We study the power spectrum of the stochastic background of gravitational waves produced at reheating ...

The Preheating - Gravitational Wave Correspondence: I

The gravitational wave equations form a parametric resonance system during oscillatory reheating after inflation, when cast in terms of the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor. This is in direct analogy with preheating. For chaotic inflation with a quadratic potential, this analogy is exact. The resulting amplification of the gravitational wave spectrum begins in the broad resonance ...

The next generation of gravitational wave detectors holds out the prospect of detecting a stochastic gravitational wave background generated in the very early universe. In this article, we review the various cosmological processes which can lead to such a background, including quantum fluctuations during inflation, bubble collisions in a first-order phase transition and the decay of a network o...
